Working with the Moon

Why follow the phases of the moon? Each phase brings with it unique energy, which repeats every moon cycle. If you follow the moon cycle, and track your own energy during each phase, you may be surprised to see how you sync up together. After all, the moon affects the tides, and we are almost 80% water!

The new moon brings with it fresh, new energy, since it’s the beginning of the moon cycle. The energy of the new moon is one of inward reflection, and this is a great time to set intentions for the upcoming moon cycle.

The full moon brings with it outward expansive energy. It’s all about harvesting what you’ve cultivated in the first two weeks of the moon cycle, and releasing what is no longer serving you. It’s a good time to check in with that intention you set on the new moon, and decide if it needs to shift in any way.

And each of the phases in-between the full and new moons have their own unique energy. Take a look at each and decide which ones you might want to honor with some sort of ritual or reflection. Everyone interacts with the moon in their own unique way, and there is no right or wrong way to follow it’s cycles.

astrology and the moon

Now, let’s add another layer to following the moon phases - the astrological energy of this celestial being! As the moon moves through each phase, it also moves through all twelve astrological houses, each infusing their particular energy into the moon.

The above Wheel of the Year chart is a good visual reference for this phenomenon, but basically: when the sun is in a particular sign, the new moon during that sun sign always matches with the sun (so, a new moon during the Aries time of year will always be in Aries). Alternatively, the full moon during each astrological phase will be in the sign directly opposite that sun sign (so, for Aries, the full moon will be in Libra).

Each sign brings with it unique energy, and I love to work with these energies when I pull tarot spreads on each full and new moon.

This chart shows the full and new moon energies, but the moon moves through a new astrological sign every few days. If you are working with other moon phases, it is helpful to look up what phase the moon is in for that particular phase (for this, I really like to reference the iLuna app!)
